Metabolic typing
Metabolic Typing highlights your child's biochemical uniqueness - in other words, what specific
foods he/she should ideally be eating, as well as what ratios of proteins, carbohydrates and fats are
best suited for him/her. Foods (and drink) have the ability to cause a shift in pH and since good health
implies an appropriate acid/alkaline balance, it's important to understand that every child has a
different reaction to foods. Without getting too technical, let's look at the following example:
Daniel tends to oxidize (burn) his carbohydrates really quickly (we would call him a fast oxidizer),
making them a 'bad' foodstuff for him to over-rely on; instead he should be eating more protein
and fat with vegetables and some fruit. Rebecca, on the other hand, is a slow oxidizer and so does much
better with more carbohydrates in her diet, coupled with less fat and protein. As mentioned, some foods
would have the capacity to push either child into faster oxidation (a more acid state) or slower
oxidation (an alkaline state). If Daniel is already in an acid state, due to the fact that he oxidizes
very quickly, we'd want to avoid giving him foods that will have a further acidic effect on his
system (examples might be broccoli, tomatoes, onion, lemons and watermelon). Rather, we'd prefer
to feed him foods that push him towards a more alkaline state (such as cauliflower, mushrooms, avocados,
coconuts and apples). The same would apply to Rebecca, but in reverse. There are quite a few different
Metabolic Types, but these two are easy examples to use.
Apart from understanding which foods cause optimal health and which move your child away from this
ideal state, we would also be looking at establishing appropriate proportions/ratios of carbohydrates,
proteins and fats. Again - using Daniel and Rebecca as examples, it's likely that Daniel would do
well on a ratio of approximately 40% protein, 30% fat and 30% carbohydrate at each meal, whereas Rebecca
might be better on approximately 25% protein, 15% fat and 60% carbohydrate.
Children aged approximately 6 years and older can be Metabolically Typed.
